McAleese, Dermot Ph.D.

Dermot McAleese received his doctorate from The Johns Hopkins University in 1971 and he held the Whately chair of Political Economy at Trinity College Dublin from 1979 to 2004.  He was Dean of the Faculty of Business, Economic and Social Studies 1998-2004. He is currently chair of the Consultative Board of the Institute for International Integration Studies (IIIS) and he has been Pro-Chancellor of Trinity College (the University of Dublin) since 2005.

In addition to posts held in Ireland, including President of the Irish Economic Association, President of the Statistical and Social Inquiry Society of Ireland and Chairman of the Economic and Social Research Institute, his career has included work as economic advisor and on expert groups with the European Commission, OECD and the World Bank.  He has been a visiting fellow at Nuffield College Oxford. He was a director of the Central Bank of Ireland 1979-1996 and chairman of the Commission on Public Service Pensions, 1996-2001.

He retired from full time employment in Trinity in 2004 but continues his involvement in teaching and research.  He is an Associate Faculty Member of the Irish Management Institute and is on the faculty of the Graduate School of International Management, Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussees (Paris).  He has written and lectured extensively on international economic policy issues in Ireland and abroad.  He is author of several books and many articles on the Irish economy, European integration, foreign investment and trade.  A third edition of his internationally acclaimed textbook, Economics for Business:Competition, Macrostability and Globalisation, was published by Financial Times/Prentice Hall in 2004.
