My favorite topics of interest in HR are as follows: HR Metrics, Leadership, Talent Management, The ROI of HR, as well as Motivation and Engagement. All have a common thread around the “Value” of people and relationships in an organization, as opposed to the technical aspects of HR such as compensation or benefits.

A combination of places – my first exposure was in graduate school at Temple University many years ago. Then I learned as a businessperson and as an HR practitioner in Fortune 500 as well as mid-sized companies. Lastly, being fortunate enough to teach in the US and Internationally for Temple University; first as an adjunct professor for 28 years, and most recently as a full time professor in a world-class HR Department.


My greatest desire is for my students to take the theory and the practical knowledge they are provided, add in critical thinking skills and problem solving capabilities, and apply some measure of what they have learned to their own workplace. Most of what they learn should help them become more self-aware of their strengths and opportunity areas, as well as that of the employees and co-workers they work with in just about any business role.

This course, like many of those that I teach, applies a heavy dose of experiential learning through case studies and the use of a simulation model for a mock company. There are obviously some of the more traditional learning methods like current readings from HR thought leaders. But the most impactful learning is the work will do when we roll up our sleeves and solve business problems using the simulation data. In my opinion, there is no better way to learn how to unleash the potential of human resources than this type of learning experience. For that reason, the learning gained is highly leverageable, and for some (as I’ve been told), highly unforgettable. The skills and knowledge gained can be leveraged in any company across the globe, and should provide for a unique self-development opportunity for the students as well.
